Hello Students and Parents!

Well we've been working up a sweat here in 2A!  If you were a fly on the wall, you would have seen a LOT of hard work happening in our class the past few months!  It's hard to believe that it's almost report card time again.  Wow!

Theobroma Cacao tree in Bali!  (Cacao = Chocolate!)

The grade two classes, and some grade 3s celebrated CHOCOLATE DAY last week.  All the children got to learn all about delicious chocolate.  The history of chocolate, where the ingredients are grown, and how chocolate is made.  It was fun to learn all about this magical tasting delicious treat that we all know and love! Yummy!

Here I am sharing my knowledge and love of CHOCOLATE!

Collaborative Video Story Project with Miss Lilley & Mr. Wevers

The students of Miss Lilley's class and Mr. Wever's classes have come together to create a very special collaborative video project.  Grade 2 and grade 4 students together wrote captivating stories and then drew pictures and recorded the audio for their stories. The results are entertaining, impressive, and well...just simply FABULOUS!!!

A BIG HUGE thank you goes out to Mr. Wevers who spearheaded this project and taught his grade 4 students how to run the programs necessary to create these video stories.  He also taught his grade 4 students to be good leaders in a group, so that they were able to lead the grade 2s to feel successful!  We had so much fun with this project, and the grade 2 students have been able to see the fruits of their labour when they can now sit back and watch the videos that they created!

We hope you enjoy watching them as much as we had making them!

The videos are all uploaded onto Mr. Wever's blog:
http://smileaswideasgoalposts.blogspot.ca/

In order to go directly to the videos, you can click on the link below:
http://smileaswideasgoalposts.blogspot.ca/p/university-collaborative-project-2011.html

you will need to scroll all the way down to the bottom of the page until you see the videos.  Enjoy watching the collaborative efforts of our amazing grade 2s and grade 4s from MMH! We are so proud of them all!

We have just over one week of school left! Holy moly!  This year has just FLOWN by!

This week we had a successful sports day on Tuesday.  We were lucky to have a beautiful HOT day outside.  It was perfect for an elementary school sports/ fun day!

We are wrapping things up here at school!  A few upcoming events for next week:

Please expect to see more of your child's work and school supplies coming home starting next week.  We want to make sure that nobody leaves any work or supplies here at school, so we start early to make sure children don't have to carry it all home on the last day of school.

On Thursday, June 25th I’d like to have a breakfast party with the children to say ‘goodbye’.  Thanks to those parents who volunteered to bring in items for our breakfast/ brunch.  Thank you to the following parents who offered to send the following items in for us:

Hello Students and Parents!

Report Cards went home today and I am so pleased with all the student progress going on in 2C this year!

Celebration of Learning
This note went home on Friday. If you missed it, here it is again.

The school year is going so quickly!  The March Celebration of Learning is approaching soon.  We are excited to share what we have learned so far in grade 2.  Our Celebration of Learning is on the evening of Thursday, March 19th.  There are 20 minute time slots available on our website’s conference manager which can be found at www.mmh.lethsd.ab.ca.  We hope that you will be able to choose a time that suits you.

Your child’s teacher will be in the classroom throughout the time you spend with your child, as well as other parents with their children.  This is a time to focus on the wonderful things that your child has accomplished this year.  We are looking forward to maintaining a very positive tone throughout the evening.

Please try and come on your scheduled time to avoid confusion and overcrowding in the classroom. If the times available do not work for you and your child, please contact your child’s teacher to set up another time that suits you.  If after the Celebration of Learning next Thursday, you still wish to meet to discuss your child’s progress, please speak with your child’s teacher about a possible meeting time on the morning of Friday, March 20th.

ONE SCHOOL ONE BOOK LAUNCH!

Today was a very exciting day at Mike Mountain Horse School.  We revealed our book that we will be reading for our much anticipated "One School One Book" project.  We will be reading the classic novel ,"Charlotte's Web!".

Here is the official blog for our project.  Please click here to follow along with our events:

http://oneschoolonebookmmh2015.blogspot.ca/

A book and parent letter went home with students today.  In it, the guidelines for our project are outlined.  Please be prepared to set aside time EACH NIGHT to read with your child.  The goal of this project is to have the parent or adult read to the child, not the child reading to the adult.    We hope you love and cherish this book as much as we do.  Although it might be tempting to move ahead chapters once you start reading, please just follow the schedule as outlined.

Tonight, (Monday, March 2nd) please read chapters 1 and 2.

Monday, February 23, 2015

Welcome back students!

I hope you all had a lovely reading week off.  I was at teacher's convention on Thursday and Friday and I learned a lot of new things that I am excited to use in the classroom.

One of the things that I learned was about learning how to center yourself and calm your mind.  This morning we put it into practice right away with a special breathing and visualization exercise. I really noticed a difference in the classroom after that.  We have a very busy classroom with busy students, and I felt this would be a great strategy to teach them to calm their minds in the morning when they come to school, or whenever they find that their mind is wandering and they want to gain control of their focus again.  I am looking forward to doing these types of exercises on a regular basis in the classroom.  Parents, please let me know if you are also noticing any positive changes at home, because I'm hoping that the good stragegies we are practicing will start to spill over into other areas of their lives, not just in the classroom.  It is a lifelong skill to be able to calm your mind and be present.

February News!

February is a short month but a very busy one here at Mike Mountain Horse School. In February we celebrate our 100th day of school. This is a very big day for us, as we’ve been focusing on counting to 100 by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, 10’s and even 25’s. We have been learning a lot about numbers to 100 and are now moving forward to adding and subtracting. We will also be celebrating Valentine’s Day with a focus on Random Acts of Kindness. We are all striving to be kind, generous and helpful without having to be asked.

Random Acts of Kindness

In order to help our community with our focus on Random Acts of Kindness, we will be collecting toiletry items for Harbour House. Harbour House is a crisis unit in Lethbridge for women and children who may have been involved in abusive relationships. These toiletry items that we collect will go straight to these women and children in need and may include items such as: soaps, lotions, Q-tips, antiperspirant, tooth brush/paste, dental floss etc. To keep with our 100 theme, we are hoping to collect 100 toiletry items by the end of February.

Winter Walk Day!

We will be doing our annual Winter Walk on Wednesday, February 4th and require your child to come dressed and prepared to walk outside on this day. It is a fun and exciting way to be active in the winter.

Spirit Assembly

Our February Spirit Assembly is on Thurs, February 12th at 8:30. The theme is “Dress in Red.” Please come dressed in your best sweetheart colors in an attempt to win the coveted spirit cup!

100th day!

We will be celebrating our 100th day of school on Friday, February 13th and will require parent volunteers to help run a center in the gym. If you are willing and able to help with our 100th day please sign the form below and return your child’s teacher by Monday, February 9th. To supplement our 100th day of school activities, we like to have kids bring in a mystery bag of 100 items. We will then have a guessing game about what the 100 items might be. These 100 items must be collected at home and must fit into a small brown paper bag. This is a great opportunity for your child to demonstrate how they are quickly able to create a group of 100 items. These items may include: noodles, cotton balls, beads, cards, small toys, lego etc. We will have the kids bring these items to school on Thursday, February 12th.

Our Grade 2 classes will also be having our Valentine’s day party on Thursday, February 12th in the afternoon. Please take note of the class list attached to ensure that every child receives a Valentine. Our list of snack volunteers is listed below. Thank you to those parents who have agreed to send snack for our party.
Fruit- Reese
Cookies –Sophie
Veggies and dip –  Brienna
Juice and napkins –Aiden
cheese and crackers-Janaye
Muffins – Gavin

It will also be closed on Tuesday and Wednesday, February 17-18 for winter break and on Thursday and Friday, February 19-20 for teacher’s Convention. We hope you all have a safe and relaxing break.
